Bike Ride Increases By 1,100 People

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Last Saturday’s Rosarito-Ensenada 50-Mile Fun Bike Ride had 1,100 more participants than the April edition, an increase from 4,900 to 6,000 riders.

Because of the increase, organizers are considering continuing the 28-year-old event, after previously saying that this past race would be the last.

“We are working on how to save the ride,” Gary Foster, of Bicycling West, said Monday. “We are receiving support from our participants, the cycling community, the mayors of both Rosarito Beach and Ensenada , and the Baja State Secretary of Tourism.”

“We recognize the importance of this event to the sport of cycling and to the region and we will do everything we can to keep it going,” he said. “We were pleased to have more participants than we expected and we had no serious injuries or problems with the event.”

Because of the decline in participation in last April’s ride, organizers had said the Sept. 27 event would be the last.

Foster said at the time of the April race that some unbalanced U.S. media reports had created the impression that Baja tourists faced considerable safety risks, and that caused the decline in April participation.

He added that almost 400,000 bike ride participants over 30 years had never had even one serious problem in the scenic coastal ride.

“We’re very pleased that the current organizers are considering continuing this historic event,” said Laura Wong, president of the Rosarito Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that happens.”
