Baja Trying to Revive Tourism - San Diego Union Tribune
Wine, food, and art from Baja California will be featured Saturday at the Embarcadero Marina Park, behind Seaport Village, in an effort by business and government to revive a struggling tourism industry.
Dubbed Baja by the Sea, the event will offer dishes such as fish tacos from Ensenada and Caesar salad from Tijuana, beer from three breweries and 30 types of wine.
Organizers of the free event have scheduled performances by the Baja California Orchestra, the Nortec Collective, and Lux Boreal, a contemporary dance troupe. Organizers have also scheduled a demonstration of lucha libre, the wrestling performances that regularly draw crowds in Mexico.
Baja California Gov. José Guadalupe Osuna Millán and the state's five mayors will be playing host during the event, spearheaded by Baja California's restaurant chamber, Canirac.
By showcasing the state's food and culture, promoters are hoping to persuade visitors to return. A combination of factors – including drug-related violence, long lines at the border and the recession – has led to a dramatic drop in tourism in recent years.
“If the tourist isn't coming to us because of the crisis, we're going out to look for the market,” said Francisco Villegas, Canirac's president.
