Mexican Auto Insurance: It's the law
Does your Auto Insurance policy cover your travel in Mexico? Do they say they do? This is not meant to instill fear, but don't be so sure. Having visited Baja California for many years and now as a full-time resident, I assure you that your U.S. insurance is meaningless in Mexico.
As in the U.S., auto insurance is required by law in Mexico. Driving without it is taken very seriously and can land you in jail. While there are many so-called "horror" stories bandied about, the fact is this: If you are involved in an accident while in Mexico, regardless of how minor, and do not have Mexican Auto Insurance coverage, the police are obligated to impound your vehicle and take you into custody. There are many reasons for this, the first being the lack of a functional civil system here in Mexico. If you are uninsured, any monetary damages incurred are expected to be paid to the victim at the time of the accident. If not, you can and most likely will be taken into police custody. This is the way the law is set up to protect accident victims.
It sounds intimidating and downright frightening, but you can protect yourself. There are numerous companies offering auto insurance coverage for Mexico. Many of these have websites where you can compare coverages and pricing available. The rates are very affordable and the protection you get is invaluable.
I, personally, have had the unfortunate experience of a minor auto accident in Rosarito a few years ago. Having valid Mexican Auto Insurance saved me legal headaches and financial loss. Do your research, compare pricing, evaluate coverages and make an informed decision.
Adventure Mexican Insurance Services provides my current coverage and I have found their pricing to be competitive. They, as well as other companies, allow you to purchase and print your policy online. Whether you purchase from Adventure or another company, invest the time and money to protect yourself so that you can enjoy your travel in Mexico free from worry.
